A RARE MOMENT OF TRUTH AND SELF-AWARENESS   Here's a screenshot from the home page of the New York Times web site this morning. All I can say is that I couldn't agree more with the sentiments expressed here.

Thanks to reader Rich Hart for the good spot.

KRUGMAN'S MOVIE CAREER TAKES OFF   I guess the gnomishly handsome professor couldn't wait for the role he was born to play -- "Grumpy", in the remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. So instead he's settled for playing George Clooney in Syriana. Thanks to movie fan David Duval for the celeb insight.

PANTS ON FIRE

I highly recommend Alan Skorski's new book, Pants on Fire: How Al Franken Lies, Smears and Deceives (order it now from Amazon by clicking here). A lot of attack-books from the right are simply that -- attacks. This one is a serious and carefully documented compendium of Franken's lies and distortions. Reading through it, you'll quickly get overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of output of the Franken lie machine. And you'll see that it's not just trivial little errors or differences of opinions labeled as "lies" for partisan effect. These are the real thing -- downright lies. If you always knew Franken was a lying bastard, but never had the intellectual ammunition to prove it to your liberal friends, then this book is what you've been waiting for!

CONFUSED INCENTIVES   Perry Eidelbus has a sharp analysis of the spending and tax bills coming out of Congress -- including drop-in-the-bucket spending reduction and tax changes that confuse economic incentives even more than they already are. Don't lose heart, though. House and Senate versions of these bills have yet to be reconciled in conference. The tax part is sure to get better (it couldn't get worse).
